Our Software Engineering Immersive course is a life-changing educational experience where our students learn the skills and mindsets to take on new careers as web developers. We are looking for a lead instructor with strong JavaScript experience to play a key role on our growing instructional team. This role is a full-time, temporary position that includes a start and end date for this cohort. There may be potential to receive an additional assignment offering, but additional assignments are not guaranteed.

What Do We Teach?

We adapt both our global curriculum and local approach to the technical trends and hiring environment of the times and regions we work in. Our primary educational approach centers around JavaScript. The curriculum is scaffolded to follow the historical evolution of software engineering:

• Fundamentals of programming and web design through JavaScript, HTML, and CSS
• API development in Node.js
• One or more front-end MV* frameworks (Backbone, Angular, Ember, React)
• Source control, team collaboration, and developer workflow

Students spend focused time building at least 4 major projects, in addition to smaller projects and labs. About 20% of overall class time is dedicated project work.

Skills and Qualifications

• You are the person colleagues naturally gravitate to when trying to figure something out.
• You are eager to shape the skills, minds, and careers of the newest generation of web developers.
• At least 2+ years of experience working on a software development team.
• Familiarity with Computer Science topics: Recursion, Sorting, Search, Linked Lists, Stacks and Queues, Sets, Trees, Search Tries, Graphs, Hash Tables, and Design Patterns.
• Working experience in both front-end and back-end development, including fluency in:
  • HTML and CSS
  • Full-stack JavaScript (strong JavaScript highly preferred)
  • At least one JS MV* framework (Angular, Backbone, or React preferred)
  • SQL databases (generally PostgreSQL)
  • NoSQL (generally MongoDB and Redis)
  • At least one additional object-oriented language (Python preferred)
• Completion of a bachelor's degree, or at least 10 years of applicable experience in lieu of a 4-year degree.
• At least 2 years of practical experience within the last five years; 3 years preferred. (Practical experience does not include teaching experience.)
• Good moral character and strong decision-making abilities.
• Strong language, mathematical, reasoning, and computer skills that ensure teaching effectiveness.

Responsibilities and Duties

• Teach and facilitate in-class instruction Monday–Friday, approximately 8 hours per day, for the 10–14 week duration of the program.
• Commit a few hours per week to preparing lessons and materials, leveraging existing GA curriculum content.
• Work closely with co-instructors or teaching assistants to provide students with meaningful and prompt feedback on their progress.
• Work alongside GA staff and the teaching team to best meet the needs and learning styles of your students.
• Guide students through development of a stellar final project that will showcase their abilities to hiring managers.
• Facilitate a dynamic, collaborative, and positive classroom community.
• Inspire students to persevere through the challenges of learning a new skill set.

The anticipated compensation range for the full duration of this course in the US market is $23,000–$27,000. Compensation will be determined based on experience, education, geographic location, and other factors.

US benefit offerings for temporary full-time or part-time employment may include eligibility for dental and vision coverage. Available paid leave may include paid time off and holiday pay.

Licensure:
General Assembly is a regulated provider of higher education, and some states require instructors to be licensed to teach. During the onboarding period, you will be required to be approved as an instructor in relevant states. Directions for becoming licensed will be shared with you during onboarding. Licensure requirements vary by state, but you may be required to provide academic transcripts and answer questions pertaining to moral character, professional conduct, education, and work history. (CO, TX, GA, WA, DC, Toronto, CA, IL, UT, NY.) General Assembly will pay for all licensing fees.
