MOT Tester Career Growth Role - IMI Training Oxford in Columbus
Career & Market Insight
This role at Mr Clutch offers a solid, stable career path for qualified MOT Testers in the UK automotive sector. Here's what professionals should consider:
Compensation & Bonus: The base salary is listed as negotiable, which requires careful negotiation at offer stage. However, the individual productivity-based bonus scheme is a genuine differentiator — it rewards personal output rather than team targets, making earnings more predictable and within your control. Experienced MOT Testers in the UK typically earn between £28,000–£40,000 base, with bonuses pushing total compensation higher.
Work-Life Balance Signals: A 48-hour week including Saturdays is above the standard full-time expectation and could be a concern for work-life balance. However, the 44 days of paid leave (including bank holidays) is notably generous and partially offsets the longer hours.
Career Development:
- IMI-accredited training at dedicated academies (Strood/Reading) is a strong green flag — this keeps your certifications current and adds formal credentials.
- Clear internal progression opportunities are mentioned, which signals a promote-from-within culture.
Green Flags: Long-tenured employees quoted (6–8 years) suggest good retention and a stable working environment. Individual bonus structure reduces inter-team friction.
Red Flags: Salary is undisclosed, which requires candidates to negotiate blind. The 48-hour week may not suit those prioritising work-life balance.
We have a fabulous opportunity for an experienced MOT Tester to join our friendly team.
We offer a competitive salary with an outstanding bonus scheme, ongoing training and the opportunity to progress within the company for the right candidate.
Current employee quotes:
- "Such a good bonus scheme, the BEST I have had from anywhere I have worked. It is more realistic here as it goes on your own productivity and not anyone else's" — Mr Clutch employee, employed over 6 years.
- "Most places you have to hit a centre bonus, but here you can hit a bonus no matter what, as long as you are productive, it is achievable. I know I am going to get my bonus because of what I do, not anyone else!" — Mr Clutch employee, employed over 8 years.
