Career & Market Insight

This is a strong entry point into technical pre-sales at a globally recognized DevSecOps company. The Associate SA role at GitLab is well-structured for professionals transitioning from engineering, consulting, or customer success into a more commercially focused technical role — without sacrificing technical depth.

Compensation context: No salary is listed, but GitLab's Associate SA roles in EMEA typically range from €55,000–€80,000 base depending on country, plus equity and variable. This is competitive for a 1–2 year experience requirement, especially given the equity upside at a publicly traded company (GTLB on Nasdaq).

Skills you'll develop:

  • Technical pre-sales and solution architecture — a highly transferable, well-compensated skill set
  • DevSecOps platform expertise (CI/CD, cloud security, platform engineering)
  • AI-augmented workflows — GitLab explicitly expects AI tool adoption
  • Value selling and ROI communication to C-level stakeholders
  • Enterprise customer relationship management

Career trajectory: This is a clearly defined stepping stone to Senior/Staff SA roles, or lateral moves into Product Management, Customer Success, or Partner/Channel SA functions. GitLab's handbook-driven culture means growth paths are transparent and self-directed.

Green flags: Async culture, genuine remote commitment, transparent handbook, equity compensation, Growth & Development Fund for certifications. Watch for: SMB accounts can mean high volume and shorter sales cycles — expect breadth over depth early on. The EMEA scope is broad, so language skills (French or German) meaningfully differentiate candidates.

Headquarters: Remote Ireland

An Overview of This Role

As an Associate Solutions Architect for GitLab's SMB EMEA Sales team, you'll be a trusted advisor to GitLab prospects and customers, helping them understand how GitLab's DevSecOps platform addresses both technical requirements and business objectives across the entire software development lifecycle. You'll guide organizations through their digital transformation journeys, from planning through monitoring, using your technical expertise, understanding of cloud and modern software development practices, and strong customer empathy.

Reporting to a regional Solutions Architect manager and partnering closely with Account Executives and cross-functional teams, you'll own technical evaluations (including proof of value initiatives and workshops), shape solution architectures, and serve as the voice of the customer back to Product Management. You'll focus on driving successful platform adoption, influencing revenue growth through solution selling, and building long-term, trust-based relationships that showcase GitLab's differentiated position in an AI-driven DevSecOps landscape.

What You'll Do

  • Drive value and change with software development for one of the fastest-growing platforms by applying solution selling and architecture experience from planning to monitoring, supporting the successful adoption of GitLab across SMB EMEA customers. Key milestones include:
    • First 30 days: Successful completion of the Solutions Architect Onboarding plan.
    • Within two months: Collaborate closely with peers to gain comprehensive knowledge of the GitLab platform, DevOps practices, and associated technologies; learn through shadowing our value selling approach.
    • Within three months: Begin engaging with customers — both onsite and remote — in a technical consultancy and advisor role during the pre-sales process, providing technical assistance and solution guidance.
  • In partnership with the sales team, formulate and execute a sales strategy to exceed revenue targets through the adoption of GitLab.
  • Educate SMB customers on the value proposition of GitLab and participate in discussions throughout their organizations to ensure successful GitLab deployment.
  • Guide technical evaluations via POC/POV ownership, RFP/audit support, and workshop design.
  • Build relationships within customer environments to enable customers to become GitLab advocates.
  • Serve as the customer advocate to other GitLab teams, including Product Development, Sales, and Marketing.
  • Continuously improve professional skills with a focus on personal mastery and team learning through training, reading, and mentorship.
  • Maintain specialty competency in one or more technologies related to GitLab's market focus through training, certification, and creation of reusable working examples for internal teams, customers, and partners.

What You'll Bring

  • 1–2+ years of experience engaging with customers in pre-sales, consulting, or similar roles, guiding them through solution design and evaluation.
  • Experience or eagerness to understand the end-to-end software development lifecycle, including modern DevSecOps practices and CI/CD workflows.
  • Practical knowledge of cloud computing concepts and related technologies, with the ability to discuss deployment, security, and operations options with technical teams.
  • Ability to lead technical evaluations such as proofs of concept or proofs of value, contribute to tenders or audits, and design and run workshops or value stream assessments.
  • Clear technical communication and presentation skills, with the ability to adapt messages for practitioners through to senior business and technical decision makers.
  • Skill in building trusted relationships, listening with empathy, and acting as a customer advocate to internal teams such as Product, Engineering, Sales, and Marketing.
  • Motivation to continuously develop professionally, including learning new technologies, deepening GitLab platform expertise, and applying transferable experience from related fields.
  • German OR French language fluency — desirable.
