Career & Market Insight

This Handyperson role at Wellburn Care Homes is a practical, skilled trade position within the care sector — a sector that is consistently in demand across the UK. While it doesn't offer a traditional career ladder in a corporate sense, it provides solid, meaningful work with job security.

Work-life balance signals are moderately positive: the family-run culture emphasizes personality fit and employee wellbeing, with mental health initiatives and a referral bonus scheme. However, no explicit mention is made of shift patterns, hours, or PTO beyond the birthday draw perk.

Skills developed in this role include general building maintenance, health and safety compliance (with training provided), record-keeping, and basic trades (plumbing, joinery, electrics). These are transferable across hospitality, housing, and care sectors.

  • Green flag: Training provided for H&S checks — good for upskilling
  • Green flag: Family-run, people-first culture with low bureaucracy
  • Yellow flag: Salary not disclosed — candidates should research UK care home maintenance pay benchmarks (typically £22,000–£28,000/year for this level)
  • Yellow flag: No mention of career progression pathways or overtime structure

This role suits someone seeking stable, community-focused employment rather than rapid career advancement. It's a strong fit for candidates with trade experience looking for a settled, purpose-driven workplace.

A Little Bit About Us

Here at Wellburn, our lovely family run business operates a little differently to a lot of other businesses. We don't hire robots. We hire people. Everyone is different, and we love that. Our recruitment policy is as much to do with personality as it is about qualifications. We need you to fit in and be part of the team. Part of the family.

About the Role

The Handyperson is key to the welfare of our residents at Wellburn Care by ensuring high standards of general maintenance to the care home and surrounding areas. We are looking for a handyperson who is self-motivated and can prioritise their own workload with a good general knowledge of all aspects of maintenance including basic plumbing, joinery, and household electrical fittings.

Our Handyperson will have a keen eye to identify general maintenance work that is required to keep our homes safe and as comfortable as possible for the residents. You will be responsible for all minor repairs within the home as well as reporting defects, undertaking Health and Safety checks (training will be given) and maintaining the appropriate records.
