Career & Market Insight

This is a high-impact presales role at Fortinet, one of the top-3 global cybersecurity vendors by revenue. The presales systems engineer title at this level typically commands €80,000–€120,000+ OTE in Germany depending on experience, often including a base/variable split. No salary is disclosed here, so negotiate confidently with market data.

Skills developed in this role are among the most marketable in tech:

  • Hands-on expertise with Fortinet's Security Fabric (NGFW, SASE, Zero Trust, SD-WAN)
  • Enterprise sales cycle navigation and technical storytelling
  • Proof-of-Concept architecture and execution
  • Industry certifications via the Fortinet NSE Training Institute (NSE 4–8 pathway)

Career trajectory: Presales SE roles at Fortinet are well-regarded stepping stones to Senior SE, Principal Architect, or Sales leadership. The exposure to C-level and security architecture conversations accelerates career growth faster than most pure engineering roles.

Green flags: High autonomy, strong brand, structured onboarding, genuine certification investment, and a collaborative team culture. The role explicitly positions you as a strategic advisor, not just a demo resource — a meaningful distinction.

Watch for: Presales roles carry implicit pressure tied to sales cycles and quota attainment of the aligned AE. Travel demands (customer sites, events) can be significant, particularly in a large territory like Southern Germany. Ensure clear boundaries around travel expectations during interviews.

Overall, this is a strong career move for a networking/security engineer ready to shift toward high-visibility, customer-facing technical leadership.
