Senior Content Marketer at Mercury - $198K + Equity in Columbus
Career & Market Insight
Senior IC Role with Real Editorial Ownership: This is a genuine senior individual contributor position — not a management role in disguise, but also not a writer-for-hire. You'll own an entire editorial program, which is a meaningful career milestone for content professionals looking to move from execution to strategy.
Compensation vs. Market: The salary range ($142K–$198K USD) is strong for a Senior Content Marketer. Industry benchmarks for this level at SaaS/fintech companies typically run $110K–$160K in non-HCOL markets, making Mercury's offer notably above average. The equity (stock options/RSUs) adds meaningful upside if Mercury grows or goes public.
Skills You'll Build:
- Editorial program leadership and cross-functional stakeholder management
- SEO/AEO strategy integration with content
- AI-assisted content workflows — increasingly in-demand across all marketing roles
- Freelancer and agency management at scale
- Data-driven editorial decision-making
Green Flags: Mercury is a well-funded fintech (over $160M raised) serving startup founders — a sticky, high-value audience. The role's connection to a mission-driven editorial voice (à la Whole Earth Catalog) signals the company values craft, not just conversion. Cross-functional exposure to product marketing, SEO, and design broadens your career portfolio considerably.
Potential Watch Points: The 8+ year experience bar is high for an IC (not manager) role — ensure the scope and compensation reflect that seniority. Also note that cover letters and portfolio samples are required; applications without them are explicitly rejected, signaling a high-bar, selective hiring process.
In 1968, Stewart Brand published the Whole Earth Catalog — a now-iconic publication that inspired generations of builders to think differently about what they could create. Decades later, Steve Jobs would call it "one of the bibles of my generation."
We're not trying to recreate Brand's work, but it's a great reminder that the best content doesn't just answer questions — it expands how people think, build, and solve problems.
Mercury's Stories team is hiring a Senior Content Marketer to help shape and grow exceptional educational and informational content for founders and entrepreneurs — people building companies, navigating uncertainty, and trying to make better decisions every day.
In this role, you'll drive the day-to-day operation of Mercury's educational blog, partnering closely with product marketers, SEO, communications, creatives, and others to continually uplift its quality, reach, and business impact. You'll develop content and distribution opportunities, edit and publish excellent work, think outside the box, and improve the systems that help our content program scale. This is a senior individual contributor role.
We're looking for more than a great writer and editor (though you should be that, too!). We're excited for an exceptional builder-operator who combines strong editorial judgment with a marketer's instinct for audience, distribution, and impact, plus a genuine curiosity about our audience.
If this sounds like you...
- A sharp writer and editor with a knack for turning complex topics into content people actually want to read and engage with.
- An audience-first marketer who balances creativity, craft, and data to make smart and high-impact decisions.
- Deeply curious about business, entrepreneurship, finance, and what founders and builders need to successfully build and operate ambitious companies.
- Always learning, whether it's new technologies, evolving media formats, or how audiences discover information.
- Comfortable bringing clarity to ambiguity, collaborating across disciplines, and raising the quality of the work around you.
- A self-directed program-builder who thrives in remote-first, async environments and brings structure and scalability to shared work…
...then read on.
In this role, you will:
- Manage the day-to-day operation of Mercury's educational blog, from content planning through assignment, editing, publishing, and ongoing optimization.
- Write, edit, and package exceptional, performant content across blogs, newsletters, campaigns, and other strategic initiatives.
- Manage freelancers and agency partners with thoughtful stewardship and grace to help scale the work while meeting or surpassing the quality bar.
- Partner with SEO/AEO, Product Marketing, Communications, Design, and other teams to identify opportunities and maximize the reach and impact of our content.
- Proactively use performance data and audience insights to identify growth strategies, improve content performance, and help the team make smarter editorial investments.
- Leverage AI and modern content tools to improve research, editing, and production workflows.
You have:
- 8+ years working in content marketing, content strategy, editorial, or a related field.
- An exceptional writing and editing track record, with a history of elevating the work of other writers through thoughtful feedback and high editorial standards.
- Proven success leading a blog, newsletter, publication, or similarly scaled editorial program.
- Comfort managing freelancers, agencies, and other external contributors to deliver high-quality work at scale.
- A solid command of business, entrepreneurship, finance, or similar subject matter, with the ability to make it engaging and accessible.
- Strong editorial judgment paired with a thoughtful marketing mindset — you care as much about who sees the work as the quality of the work itself.
Please submit your portfolio or work samples, as well as a short cover letter with your application. Applications without work samples and a cover letter will not be considered.
