Career & Market Insight

This is a senior individual contributor / manager role in a high-visibility finance function at a late-stage, VC-backed startup (Sequoia, Founders Fund, Y Combinator) that is clearly positioning for an IPO — the repeated emphasis on "public company readiness," SEC reporting support, and audit-ready processes is a strong signal.

Compensation benchmarking: The $184K–$253K California/NY range is competitive and aligns with senior equity administration roles at late-stage tech companies. CEP-certified equity managers at public tech firms typically earn $170K–$230K in high-cost markets, so the upper range reflects the IPO-readiness premium and scope of ownership.

Career development upside is substantial:

  • End-to-end ownership of a global equity program at a pre-IPO company is rare and highly marketable — it positions you for VP of Total Rewards or Head of Equity at public companies.
  • SEC reporting, ESPP design, and insider trading program experience are hard-to-acquire skills that command premium compensation.
  • Cross-functional exposure to Finance, Legal, and C-suite executives builds leadership capital.

Green flags: Clear scope, strong investor backing, mission-driven culture, AI tooling investment, emphasis on belonging and growth.

Watch out for: The role description mentions no direct reports, suggesting this may be a high-accountability IC role despite the "Senior Manager" title — confirm team structure in interviews. Pre-IPO timelines can also shift, creating sustained pressure without the liquidity event payoff.
