Math Teacher Career Growth at Think Academy | EdTech in Columbus
Career & Market Insight
This role offers a compelling alternative to traditional teaching jobs, with a structured support system that removes one of the biggest pain points in education: building curriculum from scratch. For educators early in their careers, this is a meaningful green flag.
Compensation vs. Market: At $35–45/hour for teaching, this is significantly above average for online K–12 tutoring (typically $20–30/hour). The non-teaching rate ($16–20/hour) is near minimum wage for a W2 role, so your effective blended rate depends heavily on your teaching-to-admin hour ratio. With 6–12 teaching hours and ~20–30 admin hours per week, model your expectations carefully.
Skills You'll Build:
- Virtual classroom management at scale (~18 students per class)
- Parent communication and student progress reporting — high-demand in ed-tech
- Math competition pedagogy (AMC, Math Kangaroo) — niche but valuable
- Structured curriculum delivery within an institutional framework
Career Trajectory: The explicit promotion paths — Senior Teacher, Teacher Trainer, Academic Operations/Management — are green flags for those wanting to move into ed-tech leadership. TAL Education Group is a NYSE-listed company, offering institutional stability uncommon in tutoring roles.
Watch for: The one-year commitment (through May 2027) is binding in expectation. Weekend availability is required, which limits work-life separation. Performance raises up to 3x/year sound attractive, but salary bands aren't disclosed for senior tiers. Ask about those in interviews.
Start: August 2026
Job Type: Full-Time (30–40 hours/week, W2); Remote (U.S. based)
Compensation: $35–45/hour for teaching + $16–20/hour for non-teaching time
