Career & Market Insight

This role is structured as a contractor engagement, not a full-time employee position — an important distinction. The 10 days PTO and 7 holidays are relatively modest, and benefits will vary by candidate location. Professionals should factor in self-employment taxes and benefits costs when evaluating total compensation.

Career development value: The role builds deep expertise in MSP-specific accounting workflows — ConnectWise PSA, WiseSync, WisePay, and quote-to-cash cycles — which are niche, in-demand skills in the managed services industry. Professionals with this stack are sought after by MSPs globally. It's a strong stepping stone toward a Senior Accountant, Accounting Manager, or Controller role within an MSP or IT services firm.

Compensation context: No salary is disclosed. Market rates for Accounting Operations Specialists in the U.S. with 5+ years of experience typically range from $55,000–$80,000 annually as an employee. As a contractor, expect a 15–25% rate premium to offset self-employment costs.

Green flags:

  • Clear, well-documented role scope with defined success metrics — signals a mature finance function.
  • Structured prepare/self-review/Controller-review model fosters professional discipline.
  • MSP industry experience is transferable and growing.

Watch for: The contractor structure means fewer protections and benefits. Candidates should clarify whether this is a path to full-time employment or a long-term contract engagement before committing.

About Modern IT

Modern IT helps organizations use technology as a strategic advantage through managed IT services, Microsoft solutions, cloud, cybersecurity, procurement, and technology lifecycle support. We are strengthening our Finance operations through disciplined controls, scalable processes, and better use of systems and data.

Why This Role Exists

The Accounting Operations Specialist keeps Modern IT's day-to-day accounting accurate, current, and controlled. You will own routine accounting operations across accounts payable, accounts receivable, banking, reconciliations, payroll support, time and expense compliance, and month-end close. You will prepare and self-review your work, document exceptions, and give the Controller complete, supported information for review and approval.

What You'll Own

  • Execute daily accounting activities and maintain accurate supporting documentation.
  • Process vendor bills and credits using documented three-way matching.
  • Apply customer payments, maintain account allocations, and perform routine collections follow-up.
  • Prepare payment schedules and Bill.com workflows for Controller approval.
  • Complete daily ACH Positive Pay and escalate unsupported or unusual activity.
  • Prepare bank, credit-card, clearing-account, and assigned liability-account reconciliations.
  • Support payroll preparation, contractor payments, and month-end close activities.
  • Monitor PTO time-entry and expense-report compliance and follow up on incomplete submissions.
  • Run and monitor accounting workflows across ConnectWise PSA, QuickBooks Online, WiseSync, and WisePay.
  • Identify, document, and escalate billing, procurement, synchronization, control, and accounting exceptions.

What Success Looks Like

  • Accounting records remain accurate, current, and fully supported.
  • Banking, payment, payroll, and close deadlines are met consistently.
  • Reconciliations arrive complete, tied out, and ready for Controller review.
  • ConnectWise and integration exceptions are identified before they affect billing or financial reporting.
  • Time and expense compliance issues are followed through to resolution.
  • Controller review focuses on accounting judgment rather than correcting preparation errors.

Who Thrives Here

You are organized, precise, and comfortable owning recurring deadlines without constant direction. You understand that documentation and controls are part of completing the work, not administrative extras. You communicate clearly, follow exceptions through to resolution, and know when to pause and escalate rather than make an unsupported assumption.

This role may not be for you if:

  • You prefer transaction entry but not reconciliation, documentation, or follow-up.
  • You are comfortable processing transactions without complete support.
  • You wait until month-end to investigate open items.
  • You do not enjoy working across accounting and operational systems.
  • You want authority to approve payments, payroll, or accounting-policy decisions independently.

Why Join Modern IT?

As a pioneer in the MSP space, Modern IT is not just managing technology—we're shaping the industry's future. Our belief in heartbeats over hardware means we put people and purpose at the forefront of everything we do.
