Career & Market Insight

Career Level & Market Position: "Senior Software Engineer II" at a 350-person VC-backed startup (Andreessen Horowitz, Bessemer) signals a mid-to-senior individual contributor role with high ownership. This sits above a standard Senior SWE and likely maps to Staff-adjacent expectations without the formal title. Canadian market benchmarks for this level at growth-stage startups typically land around CAD $150,000–$185,000; US equivalents run USD $170,000–$210,000.

Skills You'll Build: This role offers rare exposure to a niche intersection of skills that are in high demand:

  • AI-enabled agent development and MCP server architecture — an emerging, highly marketable skill set in 2024–2025
  • ERP/accounting system integrations (QuickBooks, NetSuite, etc.) — a sticky, specialized domain with limited senior talent
  • Modern data tooling: Dagster, Airbyte, dbt, Snowflake — standard stack for data-forward engineering roles
  • Data contracts and pipeline SLA ownership — increasingly valued at data-mature companies

Culture Signals: "High ownership mentality," "minimal oversight," and "shape the integrations roadmap" all point to a startup culture that rewards initiative. The cross-functional influence expected (product, BD, compliance) means this is not a heads-down coding role — strong soft skills are a real differentiator here.

Green Flags: Tier-1 VC backing, a focused entertainment-tech niche with real enterprise customers (Netflix, Paramount), and a clear AI transformation thesis give this role solid career narrative value.

Watch Out For: On-call rotation requirements and broad cross-functional scope can lead to context-switching fatigue. Clarify team size and rotation frequency before accepting.

The Opportunity – Senior Software Engineer II (Remote - Canada)

We are looking for a Senior Software Engineer II for the Integrations team. This role will play a significant role in our mission to build an outstanding data-first company that seamlessly integrates with a variety of ERP and Accounting systems, as well as AI-enabled agents.

As a Senior Software Engineer II, you will leverage your experience in building integrations, APIs, MCP servers and data exchange systems to design, build, and operate the connective tissue between Wrapbook and the accounting, ERP, data, and AI ecosystems our customers rely on.

This is an opportunity to bring deep data architecture expertise to a team that's scaling its integrations surface — you'll own pipelines and data contracts with the same rigor you'd apply to a core data platform, while staying close to the day-to-day of shipping product. You'll have high ownership over technical decisions, partner closely with Product and cross-functional teams to shape the integrations roadmap, and balance immediate customer needs with building durable, scalable architecture for the long term.

What You'll Do

  • Design and build integrations, APIs, and data exchange systems that connect Wrapbook to accounting, ERP, and other third-party and AI-enabled systems
  • Own integration pipelines and SLAs end-to-end, ensuring data moves reliably between systems with clear expectations and well-defined metrics
  • Define and manage data contracts that prevent upstream changes from breaking downstream integrations and analytics
  • Pitch in at a code level, whether it's code reviews, executing tickets to keep the team on track, or taking ownership of critical customer data issues
  • Work with cross-functional partners in product, design, research, business development, and go-to-market teams to build secure, compliant, and seamless integration experiences for companies and workers
  • Be a technical influencer across the company, advocating for engineering-specific roadmap items and integrations best practices
  • Provide technical direction through design reviews and pair programming
  • Stand up observability across integrations so the team can understand system health and troubleshoot quickly
  • Advocate for quick iterative development accompanied by experimentation analysis
  • Participate in an on-call rotation to support production integration systems

What You'll Have

  • Deep technical expertise in building integrations, APIs, and data exchange systems; accounting integrations or systems experience a plus
  • Experience designing and developing data-centric systems, including ETL/ELT pipelines and data architecture; data architecture experience a plus
  • Familiarity with a variety of data lakes, BI systems, and iPaaS platforms a plus
  • Strong coding fluency and hands-on experience with modern data/integration tooling (e.g., Dagster, Airbyte, Airflow, dbt, or similar) as well as Python and Rails
  • Experience with accounting systems and basic accounting principles a plus
  • High ownership mentality — self-directed and solution-oriented, comfortable with ambiguity, and able to drive execution with minimal oversight
  • Systems and architectural thinking — proven ability to design scalable, elegant architecture that balances performance, cost, and governance
  • A collaborative mindset — experience partnering across product, data, compliance, and security to align architecture with business goals
  • An AI-centric workflow — comfort using AI coding assistants (e.g., Claude Code) and building AI-enabled agents and MCP servers as part of your engineering toolkit
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills that allow you to effectively influence an organization
  • Experience working with Scrum or Agile teams
