Career & Market Insight

This Maintenance Operative role at Scape Hammersmith offers a solid foundation in multi-trade building maintenance within a professional, growing accommodation brand. The breadth of tasks — from plumbing and electrical to carpentry and plastering — means you'll develop genuinely versatile skills that transfer across the residential, hospitality, and student accommodation sectors.

Green flags:

  • Exposure to a wide range of maintenance disciplines rather than a single trade — highly valuable for career development
  • Clear internal progression routes mentioned explicitly, with opportunities to work across multiple Scape sites
  • Part of a growing global brand with properties in the UK, Australia, and the US — potential for international internal moves
  • Benefits package is above average for this sector: EAP, pension, increasing holiday, parental benefits

Points to probe at interview:

  • No salary is listed — for a 40-hour role with on-call requirements in London, the market rate for a multi-trade operative is typically £28,000–£36,000. Ensure your offer reflects the on-call element
  • The on-call rota covering evenings and weekends is a significant commitment — clarify frequency and compensation
  • Work-life balance may be challenging given the broad shift window (7am–8pm, Mon–Sun) and on-call duties

For someone early-to-mid career in facilities or property maintenance, this role offers strong brand recognition and skills diversification within a fast-growing company — a sound step toward a Senior Maintenance or Facilities Manager position.
