Career & Market Insight

This role occupies an interesting niche: it's a side-income or supplemental contract, not a full-time career replacement. That framing matters — it's best suited for established professionals (CPAs, MDs, senior engineers) who want to monetize their expertise in the growing AI training data market without leaving their primary career.

Compensation is competitive for contract work: $45–$100/hr compares favorably to typical freelance consulting rates in these fields, and the top of the band rivals or exceeds hourly equivalents of many full-time roles for senior specialists.

Skills developed here are genuinely in demand:

  • Prompt evaluation and RLHF (Reinforcement Learning from Human Feedback) methodology — increasingly valued at AI companies
  • Writing high-quality benchmark problems — a rare, specialized skill as AI labs compete for frontier training data
  • Critical reasoning and structured error analysis applicable across technical roles

Green flags: Clear pay transparency, flexible structure, and a defined growth path into higher-rate specialist and review roles. No AI background required reduces the barrier to entry significantly.

Red flags to watch: 1099 structure means no benefits, no job security, and variable income — this should be treated as supplemental, not a primary income source. Project availability may fluctuate with AI lab funding cycles. Evaluate it as a portfolio addition, not a career pivot.

TrainBrain builds expert-authored training data and evaluations for AI labs. We're hiring practising professionals in three domains to write, solve, and grade the problems frontier models are measured against.

We're hiring domain specialists in:

  • Finance & Accounting — accountants, financial analysts, controllers, auditors
  • Software Engineering — working engineers across languages and problem domains
  • Medicine & Healthcare — physicians, pharmacists, nurses, and clinical researchers

No AI background required. We train you on the tooling.

What you'd actually do

Every model that returns a broken function, a wrong reconciliation, or an unsafe clinical suggestion got there because no expert caught it during training. You'd be that expert.

  • Write hard, realistic problems from your domain — the kind that sit right at the edge of what current models can handle
  • Solve them yourself, so there's a verifiable correct answer
  • Grade model attempts and explain precisely where the reasoning breaks down
  • Refine tasks until both the difficulty and the gradability are right

This isn't your day job in a new wrapper. No clients, no month-end close, no tickets, no on-call. It's written work, on your own schedule.

What we look for

Deep hands-on experience in your field, excellent written English, and sharp attention to detail. Credentials help — CPA, CA, ACCA, CFA, MD, MBBS, PharmD, RN, a CS degree — but demonstrated expertise counts more than any specific letters. Above all, we want people who show their work and are comfortable saying "I'm not sure, and here's why."

Terms

  • Pay: $45–$100/hr, set by domain, seniority, and assessment performance. Specialised and hard-to-source expertise sits at the top of the band. Paid on a regular cadence.
  • Schedule: You choose your projects, hours, and volume. Scale up in quiet weeks, scale down when your day job gets busy.
  • Growth: Strong contributors move into higher-rate specialist projects and review roles.
  • Structure: 1099 independent contractor (or the local equivalent outside the US), not W-2 employment. You handle your own taxes; company benefits don't apply.

Is this a full-time job or a side contract?
This is a 1099 independent contractor role (or the local equivalent outside the US), not full-time W-2 employment. You choose your own hours and volume, making it suitable as a supplemental income source alongside your primary career.
Can I work from any country in the world?
Yes — the role is open to applicants anywhere in the world, with contractors outside the US receiving the local equivalent of the 1099 contractor structure. There are no timezone or location requirements.
How is the hourly rate determined?
Pay ranges from $45 to $100/hr based on your domain (finance, engineering, or medicine), seniority, and performance on TrainBrain's assessment. Specialized and hard-to-source expertise earns rates at the top of the band.
Are there opportunities to grow within TrainBrain?
Yes — strong contributors are moved into higher-rate specialist projects and review roles over time, providing a clear path to increased earning potential within the platform.
