Career & Market Insight

This is a senior individual contributor turned manager role at a fast-growing precision medicine company. Leading a specialized Data Engineering & Delivery team in a regulated (CLIA/FDA) genomics environment is a highly differentiated career position — this experience is rare and commands premium compensation across biotech, pharma, and healthcare tech.

Compensation vs. Market: The $127K–$159K range is competitive but leans toward mid-market for a data engineering manager with 5+ years of experience in the US. Senior DE managers at FAANG or top biotech can earn $180K–$230K+ total comp. However, Natera's mission-driven culture, equity potential (not mentioned here), and niche genomics expertise may compensate for a slight pay gap versus pure tech companies.

Skills You'll Build:

  • PB-scale data engineering in cloud environments (high demand in 2024–2025)
  • Regulatory data compliance (CLIA, FDA) — a scarce and valuable skill in healthcare tech
  • Cross-functional stakeholder management in a scientific/clinical context
  • ETL architecture, dbt, and modern data stack tooling
  • Genomics and bioinformatics data workflows — a growing field

Culture Signals: Natera reads as a scale-up/growth-stage company (publicly traded, global operations, structured departments). The emphasis on compliance, documentation, and quality suggests a mature engineering culture rather than a scrappy startup. Expect structured processes alongside ambitious product roadmaps.

Green Flags: Real patient impact, cutting-edge genomics domain, career growth into senior data leadership. Watch for: The regulatory environment can slow iteration speed; confirm team size and autonomy level before accepting.

This is an exciting opportunity to lead a Data Engineering & Delivery (DED) team at Natera, a global leader in precision medicine and genomics testing. As a Manager of the DED team inside our Data Science Production Engineering (DSPE) department, you will work with Natera's diverse and ultra-large data sets (up to PB size), develop innovative solutions with the latest information and cloud technologies, and make real impact by providing timely, accurate, and robust data products and data delivery/automation systems to support Natera's Lab Operations and Genetic Counselor/Lab Director teams — ultimately impacting patients' medical outcomes.

Primary Responsibilities

Leadership
  • Lead the DED team to collectively develop and maintain data infrastructure, data ingestion solutions, ETL pipelines, robust data products, and data delivery solutions for both production support and DSPE internal applications.
  • Manage the DED team to achieve timely and efficient delivery of robust data products and systems that meet DSPE business needs and project requirements.
  • Measure, report, and maintain/improve operational effectiveness.
  • Train and coach team members on new technologies, procedures, and best practices.
Technical
  • Translate DSPE's business needs and project requirements into technical specifications and implementation plans.
  • Work with DSPE leadership to create design documents for data system architecture, ETL pipelines, data delivery solutions, and other data systems/tools/components.
  • Contribute to key development, testing, deployment, validation, maintenance, and update activities on data products, data systems/tools/components, and data delivery tasks.
Quality, Compliance, and Documentation
  • Improve and enforce operating procedures for compliance, quality, and efficiency.
  • Create training materials and contribute to training activities on DED team-owned data products and systems.
Cross-Functional
  • Engage proactively and directly with internal and external stakeholders to align development roadmaps, resolve dependencies, and exchange performance metrics.
  • Represent the DED team in stakeholder meetings.

Qualifications

  • Master's degree in Statistics, Data Science, Bioinformatics, Computer Science, Mathematics, Management Science, Operational Research, or a related field. Doctorate degree is a plus.
  • Minimum 5 years of relevant industry experience (Master's), or minimum 2 years (Doctorate).
  • Minimum 2 years of experience in a highly regulated environment (e.g., CLIA and/or FDA-compliant settings).
  • Minimum 2 years of management experience leading a Data Engineering, Data Production/Delivery, or Data Analytics team, with demonstrable leadership and team management skills.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Strong proficiency in SQL and Python; proficiency in R is a plus.
  • Proficiency in data analysis and statistical techniques.
  • Proficiency in data visualization tools (e.g., Tableau, Power BI, AWS QuickSight).
  • Strong SQL skills for developing robust, maintainable queries to extract and/or aggregate data from complex sources.
  • Attention to detail and commitment to data accuracy.
  • Proficiency in building data products (aggregation, extraction, transformation, QC); experience with dbt is a plus.
  • Excellent problem-solving and critical-thinking abilities.
  • Working knowledge of genomics and bioinformatics workflows; human genetics knowledge is a plus.
  • Proficiency in Git workflow and version control systems (GitHub and/or GitLab).
