Frontend Eng Manager at Mozilla - $220K CAD & Growth in Columbus
Career & Market Insight
Career Level & Market Positioning: This is a senior engineering management role at one of the most respected open-source organizations in tech. The salary range of $149,000–$220,000 CAD is competitive for Engineering Manager roles in Canada, particularly for those with distributed team experience. Toronto/Vancouver EM market rates typically sit at $160K–$200K CAD, so Mozilla's Tier 1 band is solidly at or above market.
Skills You'll Develop:
- Managing fully distributed, asynchronous engineering teams — a highly transferable, in-demand skill.
- Frontend platform strategy (design systems, architectural improvements) — increasingly valuable as companies invest in component-driven UIs.
- Cross-functional leadership across Product, UX, QA, and Data Science — a stepping stone toward Director or VP of Engineering roles.
- Open-source contribution workflows — rare real-world experience that boosts credibility in the developer community.
Culture Signals: Mozilla leans mission-driven over growth-at-all-costs. Expect a collaborative, values-oriented environment with strong DEI commitments. The non-profit backing means less pressure from shareholders but also potentially slower growth cycles than a Series B startup. The quarterly wellness days and immediate retirement vesting signal genuine investment in employee well-being.
Green Flags: 100% immediate retirement vesting, strong benefits, open-source culture, and a mission that resonates. Watch for: The role requires getting results through others rather than hands-on coding — candidates who still want to code heavily may find this frustrating. Bonus AI experience suggests the team is evolving fast.
Why Mozilla?
Mozilla Corporation is the non-profit-backed technology company that has shaped the internet for the better over the last 25 years. We make pioneering brands like Firefox, the privacy-minded web browser. Now, with more than 225 million people around the world using our products each month, we're shaping the next 25 years of technology and helping to reclaim an internet built for people, not companies. Our work focuses on diverse areas including AI, social media, security and more — and we're doing this while never losing focus on our core mission: to make the internet better for people.
The Mozilla Corporation is wholly owned by the non-profit 501(c) Mozilla Foundation. This means we aren't beholden to any shareholders — only to our mission. Along with thousands of volunteer contributors and collaborators all over the world, Mozillians design, build and distribute open-source software that enables people to enjoy the internet on their terms.
About This Team and Role
The Firefox team is a community of engineers who care deeply about delivering the fastest, friendliest, most usable browser possible. We are responsible for making the things you see in the browser work securely, quickly, and well. Working in the open is the norm, and we contribute to the code driving the Firefox browser on a number of desktop platforms — Windows, Linux, and macOS.
A Frontend Engineering Manager directs a team of geographically distributed engineers to constantly drive improvements to the Firefox Desktop experience through innovations and enhancements to the browser user interface. We need a leader who is dedicated to building exceptional teams, creating innovative solutions, delivering quality software, and influencing how the world uses the internet.
What You'll Do
- Drive initiatives to deliver value to users, ensuring the software your team delivers is high quality, highly available, monitored, and maintainable.
- Help the team navigate trade-offs and drive alignment in a fast-paced field, balancing quick delivery with thoughtful, long-term approaches across a portfolio of user experiences in the browser.
- Communicate your team's goals, the scope and risks of projects, and own the delivery of initiatives on clear timelines.
- Identify, build, and iterate on engineering processes that support a high-performing team.
- Engage regularly 1-1 with your team to discuss both technical work and professional development; provide direct and honest feedback about individual performances.
- Ensure developers are properly supported and empowered throughout the developer lifecycle.
- Create an inclusive environment which engages and challenges team members.
- Work collaboratively with many teams including Product, UX, QA, Operations, and Data Science.
What You'll Bring

- Track record of delivering front-end experiences to user-facing products.
- Hands-on experience with web technologies (JavaScript/TypeScript, HTML, and CSS).
- Proven track record of successfully leading and shipping sophisticated user-facing experiences on time, using data to inform timelines.
- Strong communication skills and ability to develop positive relationships with others, regardless of their rank or role.
- Passion to resolve problems, manage risk, lead change, and facilitate collaborative decision-making.
- Experience effectively communicating with senior leadership and advocating for engineering priorities.
- Desire to grow and learn as a manager, develop others, and get results through people rather than personal technical proficiency.
- Ability to hire, mentor, empower, develop, and delegate to geographically distributed team members with different skills.
