Outpatient Medical Coder Career at Datavant - CCS in Columbus
Career & Market Insight
This role is a strong fit for healthcare information management professionals looking to grow within a prominent health-data company. Datavant serves a wide range of clients — from hospital systems to life sciences companies — giving coders exposure to diverse and complex coding scenarios that accelerate skill development.
Compensation vs. market: The $20–$35/hr range aligns with national averages for certified outpatient coders (AHIMA/AAPC data typically places CCS-credentialed coders at $22–$32/hr). The upper end of $35/hr is competitive, especially for the specialized ED or multi-specialty SDS/OBS roles listed. Full-time employees also receive full benefits including medical, dental, vision, and 401(k) match.
Skills developed here are high-demand:
- Facility coding in Epic and 3M/Solventum — industry-standard platforms with broad employer adoption.
- Claim edits experience (Parallon, Cerner, Optum) adds revenue cycle management value.
- Trauma-level and multi-specialty coding experience commands premium rates in the job market.
Green flags: Equipment is fully provided; training is led by credentialed managers; the company emphasizes mentorship. Datavant is a well-funded, growth-stage health-data platform, offering potential for advancement beyond coding into HIM management or consulting.
Considerations: The 95% accuracy and productivity requirements are standard but firm benchmarks. Annual HIPAA testing and client vaccination requirements add compliance overhead. PRN roles offer limited benefits (401k only), so full-time status is worth pursuing if available.
