Backend Engineer at Northflank | Go, Cloud, Equity in Columbus
Career & Market Insight
Career Trajectory: High-Leverage Infrastructure Role at a Growth-Stage Startup
Northflank sits at the intersection of developer tooling and cloud-native infrastructure — one of the fastest-growing segments in tech. Working on a platform used by tens of thousands of developers in production means your work has immediate, visible impact.
Skills Development: This role builds deep expertise in distributed systems, microservices, Kubernetes/Docker, and cloud platforms (AWS/GCP/Azure) — all skills commanding premium salaries in 2024–2025. Go and Node.js proficiency is highly marketable, particularly in infrastructure and platform engineering.
Compensation vs. Market: The £45k–£100k range is wide, reflecting varying seniority. UK market rates for backend engineers with 3–5 years of experience typically sit at £60k–£90k; senior roles often exceed £100k at larger firms. The lower end may reflect early-career or contractor adjustments, while equity could meaningfully offset cash compensation at a venture-backed company.
- Green flag: Venture-backed with real production scale — not a pre-revenue startup.
- Green flag: Kubernetes/cloud-native skills are among the most in-demand globally.
- Yellow flag: Wide salary band — negotiate based on your experience level and clarify equity terms (vesting schedule, cliff, strike price).
- Yellow flag: No explicit mention of PTO, learning budget, or async culture — ask during interviews.
This role is well-suited for mid-to-senior engineers who want to deepen their distributed systems expertise and gain startup equity exposure.
