AutoCAD Drafter – DoD Defense Career at MANTECH in Columbus
Career & Market Insight
This AutoCAD Drafter role at MANTECH offers a solid entry point or mid-career step into defense contracting, a sector known for job stability, government-backed contracts, and clear specialization paths. MANTECH has been a DoD partner since 1968, signaling organizational stability rather than startup-style risk.
Compensation context: The $55,700–$93,600 range is broad, reflecting variation in clearance level, experience, and contract wage determinations. For an AutoCAD drafter role, mid-market rates nationally sit around $55,000–$75,000; the upper end here is competitive, especially given the remote component.
Skills you'll develop or sharpen:
- Advanced AutoCAD and 3D modeling (SolidWorks/Inventor) for naval/marine systems
- MIL-STD-31000 and DoD engineering drawing standards — highly specialized and in-demand in defense
- Technical documentation and quality control in a regulated government environment
- Vendor communication and COTS component sourcing
Green flags: Fully remote with only monthly site visits; path to becoming "fully remote" as you learn the role; structured clearance requirements indicate a serious, compliant employer.
Watch points: The Secret clearance requirement narrows applicant eligibility significantly. Career growth within pure drafting can plateau — those aiming higher should express interest in CAD/design engineering roles over time. MANTECH's large size means structured but potentially slower advancement compared to smaller defense firms.
