Senior Java Payments Engineer - $175K–$197K at FastSpring in Columbus
Career & Market Insight
Compensation vs. Market: The $175,000–$196,800 base is competitive for a Senior Software Engineer with 10+ years of Java experience in the US market. Comparable roles at fintech/payments companies (Stripe, Adyen, Braintree) typically range $160,000–$220,000, putting FastSpring at the mid-to-upper end of the range — a strong signal of how they value this role.
Skills Development: This role sits at the intersection of several high-demand domains:
- Payments infrastructure (PCI-DSS, PSD2/SCA, 3DS2) — expertise that is scarce and well-compensated across fintech globally
- AWS at scale — EC2, RDS, DynamoDB, Lambda; cloud-native architecture that is universally transferable
- AI-assisted development with Claude Code — early adoption of AI tooling in engineering workflows, increasingly a differentiator on a resume
Culture Signals: FastSpring is a 20-year-old, privately held company — stable and established rather than a high-risk startup. The agile team structure and mentorship expectation suggest a collaborative culture with room for technical leadership growth.
Green Flags: Pay transparency, global office presence, bonus eligibility, and explicit commitment to regulatory compliance depth (PCI-DSS, PSD2) indicate a mature engineering organization.
Red Flags: The posting does not explicitly state remote-first policy, and on-call production incident response is expected. Candidates who dislike operational responsibilities should clarify the on-call rotation expectations upfront.
