Career & Market Insight

Career Trajectory: This is a senior individual-contributor-plus-manager role, sitting one level below Controller. It's an ideal stepping stone toward a VP Finance, Controller, or CFO track, especially given the audit-readiness scope and the direct CFO reporting package ownership.

Compensation Context: No salary range is posted. Market benchmarks for a Senior Manager, Accounting at a Series B/C fintech in the US typically range from $150,000–$185,000 USD base, with equity. Wrapbook is VC-backed (a16z, Bessemer) and at a growth stage where equity could be meaningful — worth negotiating.

Skills You'll Build:

  • AI-augmented accounting — a rapidly growing and differentiating skill set in finance
  • ERP ownership (Rillet) including post-implementation optimization — rare and transferable
  • Audit readiness for a first-ever financial statement audit — high-value experience for any future CFO role
  • Cross-functional technical collaboration with Engineering and Product

Culture Signals: The language is direct and expectation-heavy — "if you want to maintain existing processes, this isn't the role for you" signals a builder culture, not a caretaker role. Team size of 350+ suggests a late-stage startup with structure but still entrepreneurial.

Green Flags: Strong VC backing, real AI adoption (not just buzzwords), Unlimited PTO, and a clear audit milestone that will boost your resume. Watch for: no posted salary range and a demanding close-cycle cadence that may compress true PTO flexibility.

The Opportunity - Senior Manager, Accounting (Remote - USA / Canada)

We're looking for a Senior Manager, Accounting who combines technical accounting expertise with a drive to build better systems, processes, and teams.

If you want to maintain existing processes, this isn't the role for you. If you want to be accountable for the numbers, build the tooling that makes them faster and more reliable, and develop a team that does the same, it is.

Reporting to the Senior Director, Controller, you'll own the monthly close, the financial statements, and the general ledger for a complex, multi-product fintech platform. You'll own the quality of our financial statements and help shape the systems that produce them, with direct partnership across Engineering, Product, and Operations, as well as use AI in your own work to improve accuracy and efficiency.

We're advancing an AI-driven transformation of our accounting function. With Rillet as our ERP and elements of the close already automated, you'll have a strong platform to build on. The foundation however remains essential: accurate numbers, reconciliations and sound controls. From there, you'll use technology to automate manual work, improve accuracy, and support growth. You should think in systems, challenge processes that rely on manual or repetitive effort, and recognize when a recurring reconciliation/task could become a controlled, automated workflow.

You'll bring the technical accounting expertise and sound judgment to prepare us for our first financial statement audit and support our next stage of growth. You'll translate complex transactions and new products into clear accounting policies, well-supported conclusions, and reliable financial reporting. By strengthening documentation, controls, and review practices, you'll build an accounting foundation that meets audit expectations and scales with the business.

What you'll do:

  • Own the financial statements from close to delivery. Run the monthly, quarterly, and annual close and review the income statement, balance sheet, and cash flow statement for accuracy and GAAP compliance.

  • Own the post-implementation build-out of Rillet (ERP) to a fully functional ERP. Build the rules and controls that drive how transactions post. Connect Rillet to subledger and source systems so data flows in without manual entry, building a close that runs on automation.

  • Redesign the ledger and chart of accounts for how the business operates today. Evolve the general ledger, subledgers, and chart of accounts to support existing payment flows, new products, and increasing transaction volume. Translate accounting and reporting requirements into clear system specifications with Engineering, Product, and Operations.

  • Lead the preparation for a financial statement audit and a quality of earnings review over the next 9–18 months. Establish process documentation, supporting schedules, and control evidence, and act as the primary contact for auditors and diligence advisors.

  • Research complex transactions under U.S. GAAP, document conclusions in clear technical memos, and translate those conclusions into accounting policies, system requirements, and financial reporting.

  • Drive practical AI adoption and automation. Identify and implement opportunities across reconciliations, journal entry preparation, recurring postings, accruals, close management, and variance analysis. Establish appropriate validation, review, and documentation so automated workflows produce reliable, traceable results.

  • Build and maintain the control framework, including key controls, segregation of duties, and review evidence for audits and financing diligence.

  • Own the month-end reporting package for the CFO. Each close, deliver the financial statements, flux and variance analysis with commentary, and key metrics and KPIs.

  • Manage relationships with external auditors and tax advisors and lead the accounting workstreams for audits and tax filings.

  • Lead, coach, and develop a high-performing accounting team. Set clear expectations for ownership, quality, and deadlines. Coach team members, strengthen review practices, and build the team's technical and systems capabilities.

  • Partner with the Controller. Help shape accounting policy, process improvements, and functional priorities, and represent the Controller in delegated decisions and cross-functional initiatives.

What you'll have:

  • 10+ years of progressive accounting experience, including public accounting at a top-tier firm and at least 3 years leading a close and financial reporting function at a venture-backed or high-growth company; fintech experience heavily weighted.

  • An active CPA license (US) or CPA Canada designation.

  • Deep US GAAP expertise, with hands-on experience in revenue recognition (ASC 606), principal-versus-agent analysis, and accounting for customer funds, accruals, and liabilities.

  • Working fluency in AI: regular use of AI tools in accounting work and experience building or deploying at least one automation or AI-enabled workflow in ongoing operational use. You understand how to validate outputs and maintain appropriate review and controls.

  • Experience designing a general ledger and subledgers for a transaction-heavy platform: payments, payroll, marketplace, or fintech. You can translate a product specification into journal entries, reconciliation requirements, and controls.

  • A record of working with engineers and product managers as a peer, translating accounting requirements into data models, event definitions, and system behavior.

  • Experience extending and optimizing a cloud ERP after implementation, including integrations, posting logic, and automation. Rillet experience is preferred.

  • A track record of managing and developing high-performing teams, with clear standards for review and ownership.

  • Clear, direct written and verbal communication, and the ability to run several workstreams across Finance, Engineering, and Product at once.

Bonus Points:

  • Experience in payroll or Employer-of-Record businesses.

  • Python or scripting experience applied to accounting workflows.

  • Experience with SOX-style internal control frameworks at a scaling company.
