Senior Level Designer - Action RPG at Indie Studio in Columbus
Career & Market Insight
A Strong Senior-Level Opportunity at an Established Indie Studio
Blackbird Interactive (known for Homeworld 3 and Crossfire: Legion) is an independent studio with a track record of shipping commercial titles — a meaningful signal of stability compared to early-stage startups. A senior role here likely means real ownership and influence over shipped content, not just execution.
Compensation vs. Market: The CAD $115K–$149.5K range is solid for senior game design in Canada, roughly aligning with industry benchmarks for 8+ year veterans at mid-sized studios. Top-tier AAA studios (Ubisoft, EA) may pay higher, but the remote-first flexibility partially offsets that gap.
Skills You'll Develop:
- End-to-end level ownership in an action RPG — a highly portable and in-demand skillset
- In-engine scripting and gameplay implementation, relevant across Unreal, proprietary, and other engines
- Cross-discipline collaboration (art, audio, narrative, engineering) — critical for senior and lead career progression
- Replayable and modular content design, increasingly sought in live-service and roguelike-adjacent titles
Green Flags: Remote-first culture, end-to-end ownership, clear seniority signals, and work on original IPs suggest creative investment and career growth potential.
Watch For: Independent studios can face funding uncertainty. Research Blackbird's current project pipeline and funding status before committing. No mention of benefits beyond flexibility is a minor gap in the posting.

PLEASE NOTE: At this time, we are only able to hire candidates who are legally eligible to work in Canada and reside within Canada.
