Career & Market Insight

This is a senior individual contributor and people-management role at a high-credibility, mission-driven nonprofit that has grown dramatically — from $1.5M to $400M+ in annual grantmaking. The communications function is clearly being professionalized and scaled, with three new leadership hires simultaneously, signaling genuine organizational investment.

Career development opportunities:

  • Ownership of strategic messaging and narrative at an organization with significant media and donor reach
  • Cross-functional leadership experience, coordinating complex initiatives across research, fundraising, and external affairs
  • Exposure to evidence-based communication within the global health and effective altruism space — a growing and distinctive niche
  • People management of a small, growing team — strong for building toward a VP-level role

Compensation signals: No salary is posted, which is a mild yellow flag for transparency. Comparable senior communications officer roles at well-funded nonprofits typically fall between $110,000–$150,000 annually in the US. GiveWell's scale ($1B grantmaking projected) suggests compensation competitive with mid-size nonprofits, not startups or big tech.

Culture signals: GiveWell is known for intellectual rigor, radical transparency (publishing research openly), and evidence-driven decision-making. This environment suits professionals who value precision and substance over spin. The role is described as collaborative but requires strong independent judgment.

Green flags: Clear reporting structure, defined scope, mission alignment, and a growing team. Watch for: nonprofit sector compensation ceilings and potential mission/values alignment requirements.

GiveWell's mission is to help people in need as much as we can by researching the most cost-effective ways to save and improve lives, sharing our work openly, and directing donations to the programs we believe will do the most good. Our work, which focuses on global health and well-being, is funded by tens of thousands of donors who rely on our research to inform their giving.

We've grown from directing $1.5 million in 2010 to directing more than $400 million in 2025. We anticipate our total grantmaking is likely to approach or even exceed $1 billion this year, and we are working toward a future that could be several times that scale. Through years of deliberate groundwork, we've been growing our research capacity and scope in order to direct substantially more funding to the most impactful opportunities we can find.

We're hiring a Senior Communications Officer, Strategic Communications to lead GiveWell's development of messaging and narratives that explain its work across different audiences and contexts. You will translate the organization's increasingly diverse and complex work into clear, accurate communications and lead major initiatives that require close coordination across GiveWell.

This role reports to Steven Profaizer, Vice President of Communications, and will lead a small and growing team. This is one of three new communications leadership roles, alongside a Senior Communications Officer, Media & Public Affairs and a Senior Communications Officer, Editorial & Production.

About the Role

Both our research and impact are expanding. Last year, we directed more than $400 million to high-impact programs. This role is central to communicating that growing impact to diverse audiences clearly and compellingly.
