Career & Market Insight

This is a senior leadership role at a well-funded, award-winning cybersecurity startup operating at the cutting edge of Confidential Computing and AI security — a rapidly growing niche with significant tailwinds from government AI adoption mandates and zero-trust security requirements.

Compensation context: The $275K–$350K base range is competitive for a Federal BD Director role in the DC market, and the role likely carries substantial OTE upside via commission and equity. Market benchmarks for equivalent roles at cybersecurity scale-ups typically land in the $250K–$325K base band, making this slightly above average — a positive signal.

Career development value:

  • Deep exposure to Confidential Computing, PQC (Post-Quantum Cryptography), and Confidential AI — all highly strategic domains for the next decade
  • Executive-level selling (CXO, IC, DOD) builds rare, high-value relationship capital
  • GTM leadership experience at a startup provides equity upside and accelerated growth versus large enterprise roles

Green flags: Recognition as a Great Place to Work, strong partner ecosystem (NVIDIA, Dell, Intel), Unlimited PTO, 40 hours paid volunteer time — signals a culture that respects employees. Reporting directly to the CRO offers high visibility.

Red flags to probe: Startup environment means ambiguity and pressure; quota expectations will be aggressive. Clarify team size, existing pipeline maturity, and current revenue run rate before accepting.

Best suited for a mid-career Federal sales professional ready to step into a player-coach leadership role with meaningful equity in a pre-IPO cybersecurity company.

Job Description

Fortanix is in search of a Federal Business Development Director — a proven sales leader to drive the expansion of our team and business across Federal segments focused on national security. Reporting to the Chief Revenue Officer, we're looking for a unique individual who wants to be on the leading edge of security data and Generative AI models for critical mission-oriented groups, with demonstrated expertise at finding opportunities, driving revenue, and managing large agency accounts on both the civilian side and in the IC & adjacent Defense segments.

The ideal candidate will bring a track record of consistent overachievement as a Federal seller, and experience leading a team skilled in selling into civilian, IC, and DOD segments. We're looking for a hands-on business leader who wants to be directly involved in key deals, in addition to coaching and team-building. As a member of Fortanix's leadership, you'll serve as a strategic partner across the broader GTM organization, providing guidance on account strategy, deal prioritization, and value-selling best practices. Experience working in a tech startup environment is a strong preference.

Role Responsibilities

As a Federal Business Development Director reporting to the CRO, you will own, drive, and be rewarded for your business. You will:

  • Develop and execute territory account plans to achieve quota responsibilities for your team and the region through direct selling and partners.
  • Drive a best-in-class sales methodology framework which includes rigorous qualification and navigation of complex Federal deals.
  • Manage effective working relationships with Strategic Alliances, Federal Resellers, FSIs, Sales Engineers, Consulting Professionals, Sales Development, Marketing, and your own network to identify the best prospects, then develop and qualify the sales pipeline.
  • Champion value and consensus selling across our GTM organization and enable AEs to create their own territory account strategy.
  • Engage with other functions across the company, as well as Fortanix's partner ecosystem, in support of sales pursuits and revenue growth.
  • Maintain a strong working knowledge of our core personas, competitors, product offering, and named accounts.
  • Most importantly: identify and develop opportunities to bring Fortanix's innovative Confidential AI solution to mission-oriented agencies that have projects where their data, applications and models must be protected at all times.

Qualifications

  • 5+ years of successful, growth-oriented sales experience in key security agencies and SIs. Leadership experience is a major plus.
  • Location in the Washington DC area and an active security clearance are highly desired.
  • Proven track record of selling complex solutions (ideally security platform solutions) to the federal government (ideally the DOD/IC) and increasing revenue through net-new customer acquisition, working with and through strategic partner channels (FSIs, Partners, Consultants, etc.).
  • Demonstrated ability to sell to CXO, technical buyers, and Line of Business, successfully emphasizing business value versus product.
  • Excellent presentation, negotiation, and executive engagement skills.
  • Experience coaching direct and indirect team members on strategies to drive sales wins.
  • Accurate reporting on sales activity and forecasting; consistent monitoring of the sales activity of the team, and tracking of results.
  • Bachelor's degree; MBA preferred or relevant experience.
