Butcher Role at Top Ontario Meat Processor - No Exp in Columbus
Career & Market Insight
Entry point into a large, established food processing operation — The Butcher Shoppe is one of Ontario's largest meat processors with 40+ years of history, processing over 100,000 lbs daily. This signals stability, but also a mature, process-driven culture rather than a fast-moving startup environment.
No prior meat industry experience required, making this accessible for career changers or recent post-secondary graduates. The role offers genuine skilled-trade development: artisanal butchery is a tangible, transferable craft increasingly valued in specialty food retail, hospitality, and direct-to-consumer markets.
Skills you'll develop:
- Precision cutting, trimming, and custom meat preparation
- Food safety and Ontario Health & Safety compliance
- Inventory control and quality assurance in a high-volume environment
- Operational problem-solving in a physical production setting
Compensation is not disclosed, which is a mild red flag — candidates should ask directly about wage range, overtime policies, and shift structure during the interview process. Ontario's minimum wage as of 2024 is $17.20/hr; skilled butcher roles typically range from $18–$28/hr depending on experience.
Green flags: people-first philosophy, company scale and growth trajectory, diverse customer base. Watch for: physically demanding conditions (cold environments, heavy lifting), shift work norms in food processing, and limited remote or flexible work options long-term.
