Senior PM Billing & Monetization at Kong - Career in Columbus
Career & Market Insight
Career Positioning: This is a senior-level, high-visibility PM role at the heart of Kong's monetization transformation. Owning billing, entitlements, and provisioning end-to-end positions you as a rare "monetization PM" — a specialization in growing demand as SaaS companies shift to consumption-based pricing models.
Compensation Context: No salary is listed. For a Senior PM with 6+ years in SaaS billing/monetization at a well-funded, enterprise-stage company like Kong, US market rates typically range from $160,000–$220,000 base, with meaningful equity in a late-stage/pre-IPO company. Kong has raised over $300M in funding, so equity upside is real but depends on timing.
Skills You'll Build:
- Consumption-based and usage-metered billing architecture (high-demand, niche skill)
- Cloud marketplace integrations (AWS, GCP, Azure) — increasingly valuable as B2B SaaS shifts to marketplace distribution
- CPQ-to-billing pipeline design and Salesforce integration
- Cross-functional leadership spanning Finance, Sales, and Engineering
Green Flags: Explicit scope ownership, two transformational programs running in parallel (multi-product expansion + pricing overhaul), and direct reporting to a Sr Director. The problem space is well-defined and impactful.
Watch For: "Historically manual and relationship-driven" billing systems signal potential technical debt. Expect to spend considerable early time on discovery and legacy system untangling before building net-new capabilities. Strong for experienced PMs who enjoy greenfield transformation; potentially frustrating for those expecting a clean-slate build from day one.

The Mission:
Kong is building the future of AI connectivity, empowering developers to connect, secure, and scale their applications with speed and intelligence. We are hiring a Product Manager, Billing to lead the product and systems work behind how Konnect makes money: entitlements, metering, checkout, invoicing, provisioning, and the enterprise and marketplace motions that surround them.
In this role you are the product owner of Konnect's commercial operating layer: the systems that translate what Sales sells and what customers use into what ends up on an invoice. That means plan and entitlement design, the usage metering pipeline, self-serve checkout and subscription lifecycle, customer organization and billing admin experiences, enterprise billing workflows (CPQ sync, custom contracts), and cloud marketplace billing. You will work hand-in-hand with Product Growth, Pricing & Packaging, Finance, GTM, Sales, and Engineering.
This role reports to the Sr Director, Product (Platform) and sits at the intersection of two multi-year transformations: Kong's move from a single-product API gateway company into a multi-product enterprise, and Monetization's company-wide overhaul of pricing and packaging. The Billing, Provisioning, and Fulfillment program has historically been manual and relationship-driven. Your job is to turn it into a product, so Sales can sell more, Finance can bill more accurately, and customers get an experience that matches the quality of what they are paying for.
What You'll Do:
Platform Vision: Set a multi-year direction for how Konnect prices, meters, entitles, and invoices. Decide what becomes shared platform capability versus what stays feature-specific, and sequence delivery so near-term work lands without creating long-term drag.
Unified Entitlements: Build the entitlements model that determines what every customer can access within Konnect. Make entitlements a first-class concept that is consistently defined in contracts, enforced in-product, honored by provisioning, and reflected in billing.
Pricing & Packaging Delivery: Act as the product and systems counterpart to Monetization. Translate pricing and packaging decisions into production reality: configuring plans, reshaping metering, updating contracts, coordinating customer migrations, and making sure a rollout doesn't disrupt existing revenue.
Metering & Usage Visibility: Run the event pipeline, aggregation layer, and reporting experiences that show customers what they consumed and what they are being charged. Hold a financial-grade bar on accuracy, auditability, and reconcilability.
Checkout & Subscription Lifecycle: Own how customers self-serve onto a plan, change plans, renew, lapse, and recover. That covers plan discovery, checkout, the underlying payments integration, subscription state, retries and dunning, and the admin surfaces where customers manage their own billing.
Enterprise & Marketplace Motions: Connect Kong's enterprise sales and channel motions to the billing stack: CPQ-to-entitlement sync, bespoke contract handling, invoice-based billing, and marketplace billing across AWS, GCP, and Azure as we expand our presence there.
Fulfillment Automation: Replace today's manual, high-touch provisioning and fulfillment processes with productized, automated workflows. This includes migrating off the current metering and billing system onto a target stack that supports the new pricing and packaging framework.
Outcomes & Measurement: Define the health metrics for the domain, including net revenue retention, billing-driven churn, invoice dispute rate, collections aging, and billing support ticket load. Use them to set priorities and hold the team accountable for results.
What You'll Bring:
At least 6 years of product management experience in SaaS, with 2 or more spent directly in a billing, monetization, or pricing domain.
Ability to reason about the moving parts of a billing stack well enough to co-design the architecture with your engineering partner.
Experience carrying a pricing or packaging change from proposal through to production, including financial modeling, plan configuration, grandfathering logic, migrations, sales enablement, and customer communication.
Experience building or scaling consumption-based monetization, with an understanding of tradeoffs between simplicity, accuracy, and customer trust when metering drives the invoice.
Ability to pull your own numbers when needed (SQL, Snowflake, Hex, or equivalent) and use data to set priorities rather than to decorate decisions already made.
Direct hands-on experience with Stripe or a metered billing platform (Metronome, Orb, OpenMeter) — not just through an engineer.
Commitment to holding billing surfaces (plan pages, checkouts, invoices, usage dashboards) to the same design standard as the rest of the product.
Background working in or adjacent to API, infrastructure, or developer-platform products, and comfort with the technical context that comes with that territory.
Ability to independently define and execute the long-term vision to bring billing, fulfillment, and provisioning to best-in-class for the company's success.
Bonus Points:
Experience leading an end-to-end pricing transformation or building a billing system from scratch.
Shipped cloud marketplace integrations (AWS, GCP, Azure) or Salesforce CPQ-to-billing integrations.
Proficiency using LLMs and coding agents as part of your day-to-day product management workflow.
