Career & Market Insight

This is an independent contractor (1099-style) role, not a salaried position, which means no employer-provided benefits such as health insurance, PTO, or retirement contributions. Compensation structure and rates are not disclosed, which is a notable gap — interpreters in the OPI/VRI (over-phone/video remote interpreting) market typically earn $0.30–$1.00+ per minute depending on language pair rarity and certifications.

Language pair value: Kunama and Tigrinya are rare and high-demand language pairs, particularly in humanitarian, legal, and medical settings. Fluency in these languages significantly increases earning potential and long-term marketability compared to more common language pairs.

Career development signals:

  • Green flag: LSA is an established player in the language services industry and has been recognized as a Top Provider and Top Workplace — credibility for your interpreter CV.
  • Green flag: Exposure to diverse industry verticals (healthcare, legal, social services) builds a well-rounded interpretation portfolio.
  • Yellow flag: No mention of rate transparency, minimum guaranteed hours, or professional development support — typical for contractor models.
  • Certifications like CMI or CCHI are preferred, making this a good opportunity to work toward or leverage existing credentials.

For interpreters building a freelance career, this role suits those who want flexibility and variety. It is not ideal for those seeking career advancement into management or structured growth tracks.
