Career & Market Insight

Work-Life Balance Signals: BetterHelp explicitly states employees won't be expected to "sacrifice well-being" and promotes "sustainable ways of working." As a mental health company, this messaging carries more credibility than in most sectors. The fully remote policy with optional in-person meetups adds genuine flexibility. These are green flags for balance-conscious engineers.

Compensation vs. Market: The $110K–$160K base range (plus performance bonus) is competitive for a senior full-stack engineer at a mid-size tech company, though it sits below top-tier FAANG ranges ($180K–$250K+). For a mission-driven, remote-first company backed by Teladoc Health, the total package — including free therapy, strong health benefits, and 401(k) match — adds meaningful value beyond base salary.

Skills You'll Build: This role offers strong exposure to:

  • Full ownership of features end-to-end (high autonomy, fast growth)
  • Modern React/Next.js frontend paired with Laravel PHP backend — marketable, widely-used stack
  • Legacy modernization experience, which is highly valued in enterprise and scale-up environments
  • AI-assisted development tooling — an increasingly critical skill across the industry
  • Healthcare/HIPAA-adjacent privacy and security practices — a niche that commands premium compensation

Company & Culture Signals: BetterHelp operates with startup energy but Teladoc Health's financial backing removes typical funding risk. With 30,000+ therapists and millions of users, this is a scaled growth-stage company — not an early-stage startup. Engineers are expected to own decisions and mentor peers, signaling a relatively flat, senior-leaning engineering culture. Five+ years of experience required confirms this is not a junior role.

Red Flag to Watch: The tech stack includes legacy code (jQuery, Twig, Bootstrap), so be prepared for some technical debt alongside modern work.

What are we looking for?

We're looking for a talented software engineer who enjoys solving complex problems, learning continuously, and building products that make a meaningful difference. This role is ideal for someone who has delivered multiple challenging projects, takes pride in writing thoughtful, maintainable code, and enjoys both mentoring and learning from teammates.

You'll join an engineering culture that values ownership, curiosity, collaboration, and sound technical judgment. We embrace modern engineering practices and thoughtfully adopt new technologies, including AI, to help engineers focus on solving hard problems while keeping human expertise at the center of every decision.

What will you do?

  • Develop end to end, owning features from technical design and development through deployment, monitoring, and continued improvement.
  • Write clean, secure, readable, maintainable, and scalable code.
  • Collaborate closely with engineers, product managers, designers, and other cross-functional partners.
  • Design, integrate, and build internal and external APIs.
  • Develop new products and features while improving and modernizing existing systems.
  • Write and optimize SQL queries and design relational database schemas.
  • Create and maintain complex backend services and algorithms.
  • Profile, troubleshoot, and optimize new and legacy code.
  • Build experiences that work across mobile, tablet, and desktop environments.
  • Contribute to code reviews, technical discussions, and engineering practices that improve quality, reliability, security, and developer experience.
  • Ship thoughtfully and frequently in an agile environment with continuous deployment.
  • Care about the product, mission, and long-term success, well beyond checking off development tasks.
  • Thoughtfully use approved AI-assisted development tools to reduce repetitive work, explore solutions, and improve productivity while applying your own engineering judgment to architecture, implementation, security, privacy, and code quality. Engineers remain accountable for every technical decision.

Technology Stack

We use a mix of established and modern technologies to support a platform serving millions of users. As our products evolve, we're continually improving our architecture, modernizing portions of our codebase, and evaluating technologies that help us build secure, reliable, and scalable software.

  • Backend: Linux, nginx, Laravel (PHP), MySQL, Redis
  • Frontend: React, Next.js, JavaScript, HTML5, CSS/SASS
  • Legacy technologies you may encounter during modernization: Twig, Bootstrap, jQuery

We do not expect candidates to have worked with every technology in our environment. We value strong software engineering fundamentals, curiosity, and the ability to learn unfamiliar systems.

What will you NOT do?

  • You will NOT worry about funding. We have startup energy, with the support and resources of our parent company, Teladoc Health.
  • You will NOT be limited to a narrow set of responsibilities. We encourage employees to contribute ideas, develop new skills, collaborate across teams, and explore opportunities that support both their growth and the growing needs of the business.
  • You will NOT be expected to navigate a culture driven by ego or unnecessary hierarchy. We value respectful collaboration, thoughtful debate, and teammates who are committed to shared success.
  • You will NOT be expected to sacrifice your well-being to make an impact. We work hard and hold ourselves to high standards, all while supporting sustainable ways of working.
  • You will NOT have to wonder why your work matters. The work we do here helps to expand access to mental health care and supports people seeking help when they need it.

Can I work remotely?

Yes. This role can be performed remotely from anywhere in the U.S. While we embrace the flexibility of remote work, we also value opportunities to bring teams together in person for collaboration and connection. BetterHelp covers approved expenses for company-requested travel, and reasonable accommodations are available for employees who are unable to travel.
