Career & Market Insight

This is a high-impact, customer-facing engineering role at one of the most well-funded AI/autonomy companies in the world ($15B valuation). For engineers at the intersection of embedded systems and autonomous vehicles, this is a rare opportunity to work on cutting-edge physical AI deployments with direct exposure to top global automakers and US defense programs.

Compensation: No salary is listed, but Field Integration Engineers with 2–5 years of experience at a company of this profile typically earn $130,000–$175,000 annually in the Chicago/Silicon Valley market. Applied Intuition's funding profile and competitive talent market suggest strong total comp including equity.

Skills you'll build:

  • Deep expertise in automotive protocols (CAN, J1939, Automotive Ethernet) — highly marketable across Tier 1 suppliers and OEMs
  • HIL/SIL integration experience, which is increasingly demanded as ADAS and autonomous systems scale
  • Cross-functional influence: bridging customer engineering leadership and internal product teams
  • Python/Bash automation in field environments — a practical, portable skill set

Green flags: $15B valuation with 18 of the top 20 global automakers as customers signals strong product-market fit. The role offers genuine breadth — software, firmware, hardware, and customer interaction — rare for a single position.

Red flags: The 30–50%+ travel requirement is demanding and may impact work-life balance. The strict 5-day in-office policy leaves little flexibility. No benefits or salary transparency is disclosed, which warrants clarification during the interview process.

We are an in-office company, and our expectation is that full-time employees primarily work from their Applied Intuition office 5 days a week. However, we also recognize the importance of flexibility and trust our employees to manage their schedules responsibly. This may include occasional remote work, starting the day with morning meetings from home before heading to the office, or leaving earlier when needed to accommodate family commitments. This in-office expectation does not apply to contractor positions.

About the Role

We are seeking Field Integration Engineers who excel at connecting software engineering, customer interaction, and hands-on field operations. In this position, you will drive the full-stack integration and deployment of our software solutions across customer hardware, physical vehicles, and test benches.

Serving as the key technical expert on-site, mainly in the greater Chicago area, you will ensure our software operates seamlessly on customer vehicles. You will bring up target hardware, SIL, and HIL setups; troubleshoot integration challenges spanning software, firmware, and vehicle networks; and partner directly with customer systems and software engineering teams to deliver production-ready autonomous and intelligent vehicle technology.

Travel Expectation: This position requires significant travel (30%–50%+) to customer facilities, proving grounds, test tracks, and active field deployment sites.

At Applied Intuition, you will:

  • Deploy, configure, and integrate vehicle software stack, middleware, and application-level code on customer target hardware, HIL simulators, and vehicle platforms.

  • Serve as the primary technical escalation point on-site. Collect logs/telemetry, bisect software pipelines, debug system crashes, and isolate root causes across software-hardware boundaries.

  • Debug and validate communication interfaces (CAN, LIN, Automotive Ethernet, J1939) and verify end-to-end data flow between sensors, ECUs, and application software.

  • Partner closely with internal core software/firmware engineering teams to reproduce complex field issues, validate fixes, and push continuous system improvements.

  • Write Python scripts, Bash automation, and internal tooling to streamline deployment, automated diagnostics, and log collection in field environments.

  • Work directly with customer engineering leadership to define target integration use-cases, articulate system constraints, and establish clear integration milestones.

We're looking for someone who has:

  • BS or MS in Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechatronics, Computer Science, or a related technical field.

  • Strong programming skills in embedded C and/or C++, with solid software engineering practices in Linux development and command-line environments.

  • 2+ years of hands-on experience integrating, testing, and debugging software applications on physical target platforms or embedded hardware.

  • Practical understanding of automotive or industrial network topologies, protocol analysis (CAN, Ethernet, J1939), and diagnostic standards (UDS, DoIP, OBD-II).

  • Strong analytical skills to systematically isolate faults across multi-component software pipelines and hardware interfaces.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills with the confidence to represent the engineering team in fast-paced, high-stakes customer environments.

  • Ability and willingness to travel 30%–50%+ to domestic and international customer locations and testing sites.

Nice to have:

  • Experience with vehicle platforms, autonomous systems, robotics, or active industrial/field environments.

  • Familiarity with AUTOSAR platform concepts (RTE, SWCs, ARXML), SIL/HIL test rigs, or ROS/ROS2 architecture.

  • Experience using network analysis tools (e.g., Vector CANoe/CANape, Wireshark, PEAK-System) or hardware debugging tools (oscilloscopes, multimeters).

  • Scripting capability in Python for data processing, log parsing, or test automation.

Don't meet every single requirement? If you're excited about this role but your past experience doesn't align perfectly with every qualification in the job description, we encourage you to apply anyway. You may be just the right candidate for this or other roles.
