Career & Market Insight

Compensation vs. Market: The $220K–$270K base for a Director of Engineering - Data is competitive but sits at the mid-to-upper range for this level at a growth-stage SaaS company. Top-tier tech companies (FAANG) pay Directors in data $280K–$350K+ base, but Boulevard's equity component and growth-stage upside could meaningfully close that gap. Variable comp adds further potential.

Career Development Value: This is a greenfield leadership opportunity — you're architecting and scaling a data platform from a relatively early stage, not maintaining a legacy system. Skills you'll deepen include:

  • Modern data stack mastery: dbt, Snowflake, Airflow, Kafka, LLM/ML infrastructure
  • HIPAA compliance and regulated-data governance — increasingly rare and valuable
  • Executive stakeholder management and cross-functional product delivery
  • Building and scaling engineering teams from the ground up

Culture Signals: Boulevard (founded 2016, Series C stage) reflects a startup-to-scale-up culture — founder-led origins, emphasis on curiosity and experimentation, relatively flat leadership (you report directly to the SVP of Engineering). Team size hints suggest the data engineering org is still growing, meaning high-impact ownership but potentially limited peer benchmarking.

Green Flags: Foundational mandate with real architectural authority, equity upside at a growth stage, and a niche vertical (self-care SaaS) that's underserved by competitors.

Watch For: The role spans an unusually broad surface area (infra, governance, ML/AI, security, products). Ensure team headcount commitments are clear before accepting — scope without staffing is a common Director-level trap.

Who is Boulevard?

Boulevard provides the first and only client experience platform for appointment-based, self-care businesses. We empower our customers to give their clients more of the magical moments that matter most.

Before launching in 2016, our founders spent months interviewing salon managers and working behind front desks to understand their pain points so we could design a modern, user-friendly platform that meets the unique needs of their business. Our roots may be in hair salons, but we are built for the broader self-care industry, including many types of salons, spas, medspas, barbershops, and more. Our technology not only helps our customers survive but thrive. Take a look at how we (and YOU) can make that happen.

We have an insatiable curiosity and embrace experimentation. We believe that simple solutions require the most sophistication, and we design each and every detail to maximize potential, power, and impact. Do our values match? Read through our story and what we value the most.

Our team values and celebrates our diverse backgrounds. Being open about who we are and what we do allows us to do the best work of our lives. We believe in equal opportunity for all, and you should too.

Come do the best work of your life at Boulevard.
