Embedded Linux Manager Role at Canonical - IoT Career in Columbus
Career & Market Insight
Career Positioning: This is a people-manager role at the intersection of embedded systems, IoT security, and enterprise field engineering — a rare and increasingly valuable combination. Embedded Linux expertise (especially Yocto, Ubuntu Core, and IoT security) is in high demand as edge computing and connected devices accelerate across industries.
Compensation Transparency: Canonical does not disclose salary bands publicly and adjusts pay geographically. For context, similar Embedded Linux Engineering Manager roles at comparable companies (Red Hat, Wind River, Arm) typically range from $130K–$200K USD annually in North America, with lower bands in EMEA and APAC. The performance bonus adds upside but base pay may trail pure-software SaaS companies at similar seniority.
Skills You Will Develop:
- Team leadership across distributed, multicultural geographies
- Presales and professional services delivery — a rare mix for technically deep engineers
- Strategic advisory skills with enterprise and IoT customers
- Ubuntu Core, snap packages, and secure-by-default embedded architectures
Green Flags: Founder-led and profitable (no VC pressure to cut headcount), genuine remote-first culture, strong open source brand on your CV, and meaningful impact on Ubuntu's embedded roadmap.
Yellow Flags: Geographic compensation adjustments can mean lower pay for non-US candidates. The role spans Presales and Delivery simultaneously, which is a broad scope. Management of junior-to-senior engineers across timezones requires strong async communication discipline. Candidates expecting a pure hands-on engineering role should note the management and customer-facing load is significant.
