Career & Market Insight

Role Level & Expectations: Ruby Labs is explicit that this is not a junior role. They want someone who ships production-ready work independently and is available during off-hours when needed. This signals a high-ownership, fast-paced startup culture with real accountability.

Skill Development: This role sits at the intersection of data engineering and marketing technology — a relatively rare and high-demand combination. You'll build expertise in:

  • GCP stack: BigQuery, GCS, Pub/Sub — all cloud-transferable skills
  • Marketing data: GTM, pixel/conversion tracking, Google/Meta/Bing Ads APIs
  • DataOps: Airbyte, Airflow, dbt, ClickHouse — strong on the modern data stack
  • Observability: microservices, alerting, monitoring platforms

Market Positioning: Data engineers with marketing tech fluency (GTM, conversion tracking, ad platform integrations) command a premium in the market. Typical market rates for mid-level data engineers in the EU range €50,000–€90,000 annually; those with marketing attribution skills skew toward the upper end. No salary is disclosed here, which is a mild red flag for transparency.

Culture Signals: The language around "move fast," "go all in," and evening availability suggests a high-intensity startup culture. The Unlimited PTO and full-remote setup are genuine green flags for work-life flexibility, but the on-call expectation on release days tempers this. Best suited for someone who wants rapid career growth and doesn't mind blurred boundaries during crunch periods.

  • Experience with Google Tag Manager, pixels, conversion setup, and JavaScript
  • Experience with Google Ads, Meta Ads, Bing Ads
  • Engineering mindset and ability to work with production data systems
  • Basic understanding of BigQuery, ClickHouse, dbt, and documentation practices
  • Airbyte or similar ingestion tool experience is nice to have
  • Basic Airflow familiarity is nice to have
  • Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail

Everyday Tasks

  • Support and improve integrations in Airbyte and Airflow
  • Work with GTM, marketing data sources, tracking, pixels, and conversion workflows
  • Help move and transform data across BigQuery, GCS, Pub/Sub, ClickHouse, and external systems
  • Troubleshoot pipeline, tracking, payment, and data quality issues
  • Support payment orchestration data flows, including subscriptions and payment processing
  • Work with different systems in combination and document how data flows between them
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with Data, Marketing, Product, Engineering, and Billing teams

Growth Areas

You will develop across GCP infrastructure and DataOps, dbt, BigQuery, ClickHouse, Git, CI/CD, and software engineering practices. The role also includes exposure to internal monitoring platforms built with brokers, microservices, alerting, and observability tools, helping you grow system design skills through real production problems.

Key Success Factors

Proactivity: We need someone who notices issues, asks questions early, follows through, and takes ownership without waiting for detailed instructions.

High Availability: On release days or during urgent tracking/payment setup, you should be ready to help in the evening when needed.

Delivery Mindset: The goal is not only to learn, but to deliver reliable work across data engineering, marketing systems, payment flows, and internal platforms.
