College Admissions Counselor - Edtech Startup Growth Role in Columbus
Career & Market Insight
This is a contract/1099 role, not a full-time position — an important distinction for anyone seeking benefits, job security, or a primary income source. It's best suited as supplemental income for experienced counselors already established in the field.
Career development signals:
- The role offers strong autonomy and exposure to a fast-paced edtech startup environment, which is valuable for professionals looking to eventually move into edtech leadership, curriculum design, or admissions consulting entrepreneurship.
- Skills developed — portfolio building, financial aid advising, application platform expertise (Common App, Naviance, Scoir) — are in growing demand as college admissions competition intensifies.
- Performance-based bonuses reward results, which can be lucrative for high-performers with strong student placement records.
Compensation reality check: Independent college admissions consultants typically charge $150–$300/hour or $3,000–$10,000+ per student package. ConnectPrep claims "industry-leading compensation," but no figures are provided — candidates should probe this directly before committing.
Green flags: High autonomy, flexible hours, startup growth stage, results-oriented culture.
Red flags: No salary transparency, contract-only (no benefits), minimum 5-year experience bar with no clear compensation floor disclosed. The role requires significant expertise but offers no guaranteed income baseline.
Best fit for: seasoned admissions professionals building a consulting practice or seeking to diversify their income streams.
