Senior Cloud Engineer at MANTECH – DoD Career Growth in Columbus
Career & Market Insight
Compensation vs. Market: The $117K–$195K range is competitive and above average for senior cloud engineers nationally (Glassdoor/Levels.fyi median for senior cloud engineers sits around $130K–$160K base). The upper end reflects the premium paid for cleared federal contractors, where talent supply is constrained.
Skills You'll Build: This role develops a rare combination of VMware-specific expertise (vSphere, NSX, vSAN, VCF, HCX) alongside multi-cloud skills (AWS, Azure, GCP) and IaC tooling (Terraform, CloudFormation). VMware/multi-cloud hybrid expertise is increasingly in demand as enterprises migrate legacy virtualization to cloud-native architectures.
Career Trajectory Signals:
- Green Flag: MANTECH is a large, established DoD contractor (publicly traded) — strong job stability, clear career ladder, and access to diverse federal programs.
- Green Flag: Learning & Development budget is explicitly offered — important for maintaining certifications (VCP, AWS SA, etc.).
- Consideration: Federal contracting roles can sometimes be siloed; cross-industry transferability of clearance-dependent experience requires intentional skill-building.
- Green Flag: 8+ years experience required means you'll be working alongside experienced peers, not junior teams.
Work-Life Balance: Fully remote with PTO and wellness programs suggests a reasonable baseline. Government contract programs tend toward structured, predictable work cadence — less startup chaos, more process discipline.
This is an excellent role for cleared cloud professionals looking for financial stability and deep VMware/hybrid cloud specialization within the defense sector.
