AI Is Expanding Jobs, Not Just Eliminating Them
AI is reshaping what people actually do at work — not only which jobs exist, but which tasks land on each employee's desk. Two major pieces of research published this year put concrete numbers on a pattern that is challenging the dominant displacement narrative.
OpenAI's Global Affairs team has characterized the current moment as AI being "more enabler than replacer," noting that the primary adoption pattern so far skews toward improving how workers write, reason, and make decisions rather than eliminating roles outright. That framing now has independent data to back it up.
Atlassian's Teamwork Lab surveyed 1,000 U.S. knowledge workers between late May and early June 2026 and found that 92 percent reported their responsibilities had expanded beyond their original job description over the past year. The report's lead finding: "Rather than shrinking an employee's remit, AI appears to be expanding both the breadth of what employees take on and the depth at which they operate." Heavy AI users were nearly twice as likely to take on work from other teams and 72 percent more likely than non-users to report increased cross-functional work.
The divergence between users and non-users is stark. Workers who avoid AI are seven times more likely to say their role hasn't changed at all — and they are increasingly heads-down on narrower execution tasks. Workers who use AI heavily are shifting toward management, direction, and cross-team collaboration.
Microsoft's 2026 Work Trend Index, which analyzed more than 100,000 Microsoft 365 Copilot conversations globally, found that 49 percent of all AI-assisted exchanges support cognitive work — helping workers analyze information, solve problems, and think creatively. A separate finding from the same report: 66 percent of AI users say they spend more time on high-value work, and 58 percent report producing output they could not have created a year prior. Microsoft also noted that employers have created at least 1.3 million AI-related job opportunities over the past two years, including roles that did not exist five years ago.
A separate study of OpenAI's own internal Codex usage — conducted in collaboration with economists from Wharton, Columbia Business School, and Duke University — found that the share of individual users submitting requests estimated to require more than eight hours of human effort grew nearly tenfold, from 2.1 percent to 25.6 percent since December 2025. That is not automation replacing workers; that is workers taking on more complex, longer-horizon tasks than they previously could.
What this means for job seekers
The augmentation story reframes what competitive positioning looks like in an AI-saturated market. The Atlassian data shows that heavy AI users are moving toward oversight, judgment, and cross-functional collaboration — precisely the tasks that are hardest to automate and most visible to managers. Non-users, by contrast, are concentrating on narrower execution work that is increasingly the first to be reassigned to AI tools.
For anyone in or entering the job market, the practical implication is straightforward: demonstrating how you use AI to expand your scope — not just to finish tasks faster — is the differentiator recruiters and hiring managers will look for. Reviewing what AI skills look like in a job search context is a useful starting point; the harder work is building a track record of taking on broader responsibilities, cross-team work, and judgment-heavy tasks with AI as a collaborator, not just a shortcut. The workers already doing that are reporting meaningfully different career trajectories from those who aren't.
