OpenAI released a $230 hardware keypad called Codex Micro on July 15, built in partnership with specialty keyboard designer Work Louder. The device is aimed squarely at developers who spend their days running multiple AI coding-agent sessions, offering six programmable "agent keys" that can be customized to trigger specific tasks inside ChatGPT or OpenAI's autonomous coding tool Codex.

The keypad's keys change color to reflect the status of each agent: white for idle, blue for thinking, green for complete, red for error. There is also a dial for adjusting reasoning levels and a joystick for navigating between workflows. OpenAI describes it as a "command center for agentic work," according to TechCrunch's reporting.

Reception has been notably divided. A TechCrunch reviewer who tested the device called it "pretty fun" once programmed but acknowledged a real learning curve — users need to memorize the color system and which projects map to which key, and the reviewer questioned whether it is actually easier to use than staying on a laptop. Criticism from the broader developer community has been sharper: one Reddit user called it a prank, and an Aftermath review was headlined "OpenAI's expensive macropad feels engineered to piss me off specifically," citing the price against cheaper off-the-shelf alternatives. TechCrunch noted that hard-core coders — the product's intended audience — have not exactly embraced it.

The device is sold in limited quantities through OpenAI's Supply Co. store and Work Louder's site.

Whether or not Codex Micro finds a mass audience, what it represents is worth paying attention to. Building physical hardware whose entire purpose is monitoring and dispatching AI coding agents is a concrete declaration from OpenAI about how it sees professional software development evolving: less about typing code line by line, more about directing, reviewing, and correcting agents that handle the implementation work.
