From VLC to Robots: How Real-Time Software Skills Open Robotics Jobs
Jean-Baptiste Kempf, the lead developer behind VLC Media Player and a former CTO at cloud gaming startup Shadow, has raised $5 million for a new venture called Kyber, TechCrunch reported Thursday. The round was led by Lightspeed Venture Partners, an investor that has also backed Anthropic and Mistral AI. Kyber builds an infrastructure layer for controlling remote devices in real time, with current commercial deployments across defense, telco, robotics and AI.
Kempf's pitch is that the same low-latency engineering that kept VLC's more than 6 billion downloads playing smoothly is what physical machines now demand. According to TechCrunch's reporting, Kyber's core offering is an SDK that synchronizes video, audio, sensor data and control inputs with minimal lag — the difference between a drone or robot responding instantly and responding too late. "If you control things in the real world, every millisecond matters," Kempf told TechCrunch.
The Paris-based company, which also has offices in San Francisco and Singapore, employs 25 full-time staff, and TechCrunch reports that forward-deployed engineers make up a large portion of the team. That role is suddenly in demand far beyond one startup: U.S. job postings for forward-deployed engineers were roughly 729 percent higher in April 2026 than a year earlier, according to Indeed data reported by Business Insider. Kyber's priority segments are robotics, drones and remote IT access, and the company runs an open-source core alongside an enterprise version sold with hands-on custom deployment support — a model the report compares to Palantir.
The detail worth noting is who Kempf is hiring and why. Forward-deployed engineers, or FDEs, are software engineers who embed with customers to stand up and tune deployments on site rather than shipping code and walking away. As companies push custom robot and drone systems into messy real-world environments, that customer-facing build-and-deploy role becomes central — and Kyber is staffing heavily around it.
